Eclipse

18"x15"

I was one of the many lucky people to live in the path of totality during the 2024 solar eclipse. It was truly a magical day that somehow felt incredibly personal. Of course witnessing a cosmic phenomenon was spectacular, but seeing my community gather to celebrate was maybe more profound.

Throughout ancient mythology, the sun and the moon have been used as symbols of the masculine and feminine. I was inspired to condense those broad archetypes and personify them in a quiet intimate moment. I envision Eclipse as a photo the sun and moon captured during their fleeting reunion. It's a keepsake they look at when they miss each other. Or maybe a memory that plays in their heads when they need it most.

It all started with a bare bones outline drawing. Then I searched through magazines to find elements of the room and slowly built the interior piece by piece using my drawing as a guideline to achieve perspective and depth.

There is always more than meets the eye in my art. There are many hidden layers of small fragments that helped me determine the direction of the piece.

Creating Eclipse was a huge milestone. It was the first time I felt like I reached a true flow state in my creative process and I still use the memory of that feeling to enter that state again. There is just something about it that still speaks to me. I never go a day without looking at it.

Completely obsessed with the final result and hungry for more, I was inspired to make two sister pieces, Epsilon and Epiphany.
